Saeima supports compensation for printed press deliveries in 2020

RIGA, Sept 19 (LETA) - Saeima today approved in the final reading amendments to the Postal Law, which stipulate that printed press will be delivered to subscribers in 2020 on the same terms as now.

The bill provides for a one-year extension of the current regulatory framework for the delivery of printed press to subscribers and compensation for losses that postal companies will thereby sustain next year.

Saeima Economic, Agricultural, Environmental and Regional Policy Committee Chairman Janis Vitenbergs (KPV LV) previously stressed that the amendments to the Postal Law are meant to ensure independence of Latvian media and accessibility of postal services to residents.

"At the same time, I have to emphasize that extending the current regulatory framework can only be a short-term solution, so the government must ensure clarity over a longer period of time, including defining the criteria for granting subsidies," Vitenbergs said.

According to the amendments, postal companies will be compensated for losses incurred in providing subscription press delivery services from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020.
