First flu cases of the season reported in Latvia

RIGA, Oct 7 (LETA) - The Center for Disease Prevention and Control recorded the first cases of influenza of this season at the beginning of October, the center's communications head Ilze Araja informed LETA.

She noted that cases of type B flu have been reported in some preschool institutions and elementary schools in Riga.

Still, the overall flu rate in Latvia remains very low, with only one of the 64 family physicians participating in the annual monitoring reporting of a patient with flu symptoms, Araja said.

The National Reference Laboratory of Riga Eastern Hospital informed that last week it had detected two type B viruses of the B/Victoria lineage. An antigen protecting against the B/Victoria virus is included in this season's flu vaccine, Araja said, urging people to get the jab.
