    Cargo turnover at Riga port up 8.2% in 2018

    RIGA, Jan 9 (LETA) - The Riga Freeport reloaded 36.432 million tons of cargo in 2018, which is by 8.2 percent more than in 2017, the port reported.

    Bulk cargos accounted for 23.688 million tons of the annual cargo turnover last year, up 13.3 percent from 2017. Handling of general cargos rose 22.6 percent year-on-year to 8.622 million tons, and reloading of liquid cargos fell 28 percent to 4.121 million tons.

    Coal prevailed among the cargos reloaded in the Freeport of Riga in 2018 at 39 percent or 14.22 million tons, up 20.8 percent year-on-year.

    Oil products made up 11.2 percent of all cargos handled in the port last year, down 27.6 percent from the previous year and making up 4.085 million tons.

    In December 2018, the port reloaded 3.287 million tons of cargo, including 2.2 million tons of bulk cargos, 772,900 tons of general cargos and 313,400 tons of liquid cargos.

    In 2017, the Freeport of Riga handled 33.675 million tons.

    Riga is the largest Latvian port in terms of both cargo turnover and passengers.
