Pastor Juris Rubenis retires after serving Lutheran Church for 36 years

RIGA, Feb 14 (LETA) - Pastor Juris Rubenis has retired as a Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church (LELC) pastor after serving the church for 36 years, LETA learned from the church.

Rubenis turned to the LELC asking that he be relieved from his duties, and the church respected his request, LELC representative Kaspars Upitis told LETA.

"Rubenis has not served the parish for a long time. It was his own choice," said Upitis, adding that the church respected Rubenis' decision.

Pastor Indulis Paics earlier wrote on Facebook that several other pastors had organized a campaign of aggression against Rubenis, and a few days ago Rubenis handed in his resignation to the archbishop, which the archbishop accepted. Now Rubenis is a rank and file member of Riga Lutheran Parish, Paics said.

Rubenis was previously criticized by other Lutheran Church members for his book "Him and Her. Relationships. Love. Sex" that some Christians even demanded be burned.
