Latvian government to face major dilemma regarding 2018 budget without postponing construction of new jail - PM

RIGA, Sept 12 (LETA) - Without putting off the construction of a new prison, Latvian government would be facing a major dilemma regarding the 2018 budget, Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis (Greens/Farmers) told the press after the Cabinet meeting today.

He said that, although the ministers had agreed on the priorities in the next year's budget without any differences, the budget drafting process had not been easy.

"Without putting off the construction of a new prison in Liepaja [south-western Latvia], we would be facing a major dilemma," Kucinskis said.

According to the prime minister, the ministries still had to make some minor technical adjustments to the documentation that would be approved "in 15 minutes" during the Cabinet meeting on Thursday, September 14.

In addition to the decisions taken today, the government is yet to approve the bills accompanying the draft law on the 2018 budget but this legislative package will be smaller than last year.

"The legislative package will be smaller than last year because we have kept our promises not to introduce any new taxes. Only the Law on Value Added Tax will be amended to lower the tax rate on fruit and vegetables common in Latvia," Kucinskis said.

It is planned that the draft budget for 2018 and the accompanying legislative package will be submitted to the parliament on October 11. The prime minister said that the two-week delay compared to the original timetable for the budget approval was due to the work on the tax reform.
