    Latvia wants to strengthen cooperation with Azerbaijan in transport – Vejonis

    RIGA, July 17 (LETA) – Latvia wants to strengthen cooperation with Azerbaijan in transport, especially international transport corridor North-South, said Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis in a press conference after the meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Monday.

    Vejonis said that Azerbaijan is an important Latvia’s partner and bilateral relations between both countries are close and friendly. Both countries signed a declaration on strategic cooperation before the press conference and Vejonis said it is a significant impulse in strengthening relations between the countries.

    Cooperation agreements in education, transport and supervision of construction have been signed between Latvia and Azerbaijan. Vejonis said that these agreements will deepen bilateral relations, while today’s Latvia-Azerbaijan business form and frequent visits of state officials will promote new economic cooperation agreements.

    Vejonis voiced support to strengthening relations between the EU and Azerbaijan, where the Eastern Partnership framework plays an important role.

    "Azerbaijan is a significant EU partner in energy and transport, therefore we comment Azerbaijan’s role in the southern gas corridor project and contribution to diversification in energy supplies to the EU," said the Latvian president.

    Vejonis also said that the upcoming Eastern Partnership summit in November will be an important chance to find further cooperation directions between the EU and Azerbaijan.

    Both presidents discussed human rights and democracy issues in Azerbaijan. Vejonis called on Aliyev to continue work on strengthening democratic principles, which is important also in the EU-Azerbaijan relations. He also voiced support to Azerbaijan’s territorial sovereignty and integrity, underscoring that peaceful means should be used to solve the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

    Aliyev confirmed that Latvia-Azerbaijan business forum will bring ensure good results and several commercial and economic cooperation agreements will be signed during the forum.

    He commended the agreement signed on cooperation in education that will ensure more Azerbaijani students in Latvia. At present 150 Azerbaijani students are studying in Latvia and the new agreement will expand this cooperation.

    Aliyev is also scheduled to meet with parliament speaker Inara Murniece (National Alliance) today.
