Latvian foreign minister condemns Russia's aggression in Ukraine at UN Security Council debate

RIGA, Jan 11 (LETA) - Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics participated in the United Nations Security Council's open debate on conflict prevention and sustaining peace in New York on January 10 and condemned Russia's aggression in Ukraine, which is contrary to international norms and violating the principles of the UN Charter, the Latvian Foreign Ministry said.

Rinkevics emphasized that all UN member states must adhere to the UN Charter, refrain from illegal use of force and threat of force, and settle disputes in a peaceful manner.

"The permanent members of the UN Security Council, alongside their veto rights, have the responsibility for exercising these rights in the common interests of peace and security," the Latvian foreign minister said.

During his trip to New York Rinkevics also congratulated the new United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, on taking office and urged him to use all instruments available to the UN leader to ensure the rules-based international order.
